Portfolio Management

We manage client accounts for a percentage of the assets under our management. We provide recommendations and then execute transactions upon approval by the client.

  • We provide an asset allocation plan designed using modern portfolio theory or another method if you prefer.
  • We integrate your financial sophistication level, risk tolerance, tax situation and investment style preferences.
  • We will utilize active and/or passive investment strategies.
  • We prefer to use no-load mutual funds and Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) for the bulk of our clients’ portfolio needs. Individual stocks, bonds and CDs will be used as client interests require. Options, futures, REITS, limited partnerships, UITs and annuities may also be considered where appropriate.
  • We provide quarterly performance reports and quarterly asset allocation reviews.
  • We will help you become educated about financial strategies that are appropriate for you.

Depending on the size and complexity of your account, the annual negotiable fee ranges from 0.7% to 1.2% for asset management only, and from 0.8% to 1.3% for Wealth Planning (below) which also includes Financial Planning services. Most fees are expected to fall between 0.9% and 1.2%.

Financial Planning

We provide comprehensive financial planning services on an ongoing basis or for a limited engagement. Comprehensive financial planning involves looking at the complete financial picture and tying in all of the factors that weigh in on financial decisions. We help our clients develop a vision of where they want to go, then we help them put appropriate plans in place to make their vision a reality.

Have you ever wondered how you were going to figure out how to save for retirement, pay for education, care for aging parents and figure whether the alternative minimum tax might affect you next year? Have you ever wondered how you can enjoy your retirement savings while making sure you’re not likely to run out of money? Comprehensive financial planning is the only way to effectively and efficiently deal with multiple complex financial issues.

The Process

  • Collect data
  • Determine and prioritize goals
  • Analyze goals and explore alternatives
  • Develop a customized plan
  • Implement the plan
  • Review your situation periodically to keep your actions in line with your plan
  • Revamp the plan each year to stay on course

The Categories

  • Evaluate current financial status (starting point).
  • Plan for emergencies (Cash Reserve and Insurance Planning).
  • Other risk management strategies using diversification, hedging, liability issues and asset ownership (individual, joint, business entities, and trusts).
  • Investment Planning
  • Retirement Planning
  • Plan for specific goals (new business, education funding, retirement, vacation home etc.).
  • Develop tax strategies.
  • Create a legacy plan to efficiently transfer your wealth during or after your lifetime (Estate Planning).

In many cases, a client's Financial Planning fees may be integrated with thier Asset Management fees. For some clients hourly or flat financial planning fees may be more appropriate. Depending on the complexity of the case, we charge up to $225 per hour for consultations. For comprehensive financial planning services we may negotiate a flat fee which will be commensurate with the time involved and the hourly rate. A flat rate or a percentage of assets schedule can help reduce a client’s worries about making changes and asking questions. Flat fees typically range from $2,500 to $6,000. We will give you advice on your financial concerns, including, but not limited to: investments, taxes, insurance, retirement and estate planning.

Wealth Planning

When clients take advantage of both our Portfolio Management services and our Financial Planning services we refer to this as “Wealth Planning.” We believe this comprehensive strategy results in the most successful outcome. This is our preferred method of working with clients.

  • We provide a highly customized portfolio design which integrates your entire financial situation. This includes varying income and spending levels, varying financial goals, and handling a dynamically changing income tax environment.
  • We provide in-person meetings at least quarterly to review your situation and your investments.
  • We go the extra mile to explore sophisticated tax and investment strategies that may help you do better.
  • We provide detailed year end tax planning. We will function as a sort of financial coach or quarterback to help you coordinate your activities with your other professional advisors.

Wealth Planning is our full sevice client relationship. Our Wealth Planning Service provides a significant discount on both our Asset Management and our Financial Planning fees.

Wealth Planning fees are typically calculated as a percent of managed assets, but we may decide, with the client's input, to convert that fee to a percent of net worth. This is because our wealth advice is geared toward a client's entire wealth circumstances, not just their investment accounts.
